Spaying and neutering are irreversible procedures that remove your dog or cat’s reproductive organs. When we perform the procedure, like with any other veterinary surgery, we use the utmost care. Your dog or cat’s safety is important to us, so we use the best anesthetic protocol to ensure their safety during the procedure.

Why should I spay/neuter my dog or cat?

Dogs and cats who have had the procedure have a longer lifespan because they’re not susceptible to reproductive diseases like testicular cancer, uterine cancer, or uterine infection. Those that had it done before their first heat also avoid mammary cancer. Dealing with an expected litter of puppies or kittens can be a financial burden for some owners. Pregnancy can also be physically demanding for your female dog or cat, impacting their daily lives. By choosing to spay or neuter your dog or cat, you’re permanently altering their ability to reproduce. Another positive aspect is that altering your dog or cat’s heat cycle, which is associated with a tendency to roam and seek a mate, reduces the likelihood of being in an accident.

How early can I schedule the surgery for my kitten or puppy?

Both male and female kittens should be neutered or spayed at 6 months of age to avoid pregnancy. We will discuss the benefit and risks of the ideal time to spay or neuter your dog to ensure the best timing for each patient. In most cases, the general recommendation is 6 months of age. Our veterinary team will explain the procedure in detail and explain the pre-surgery preparation. For example, your dog or cat will need to do pre-anesthetic testing to ensure their body is functionally optimal and will respond well to the medication. What happens after the surgery?

Spaying and neutering are major surgeries, so your dog or cat will need to rest immediately after. For male dogs and cats, we remove the testicles, whereas, for females, we remove their uterus and ovaries. To aid in their recovery, please ensure the following:

• Minimal physical activity
• Wounds remain clean and dry
• No licking at surgical incisions
• Ample rest and hydration
