Senior Care for Pets

Our team is here to help keep your pet healthy and strong through their senior years.

Age is but a number! But for senior dogs and cats, aging affects their overall health. Bi-annual visits allow us to assess changes in their health and make recommendations about caring for them. Though they might have more grey hairs or move slower, they are still your beloved dog or cat who needs the best quality of care.

When is my dog or cat considered a senior?

Surprisingly, many of our dogs are considered seniors by the time they reach the age of 7 and cats by the age of 10!  This is when diseases associated with aging start to appear. Physical examinations are especially important at this time to help monitor weight loss, check for new lumps or bumps, and assess cataract development. You should be booking veterinary visits every 6 months so potential problems can be detected as early as possible. Blood and urine tests are very helpful in assuring that all vital organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are continuing to function well. What diseases are common in senior dogs and cats?

Depending on your dog or cat’s breed, lifestyle and overall health, they can be more prone to certain health conditions. For example, obesity can increase your dog’s risk of osteoarthritis since excess weight creates added strain on their joints. However, consistent visits allow us to detect signs of the following diseases early and develop effective treatment plans:

  • Arthritis
  • Dental disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease
  • Hearing/vision loss
